Some Comments from Jeff Johnson on Warhammer Events

Some of the information here was original posted in my letter to the MGCON-Information yahoo group.

I would love to have Warhammer well represented at MGCON and for the past two years the NorseCon council has run two Warhammer Tournaments at MGCON.  The Norsecon council was made up of individuals from a number of local warhammer clubs in the region, including groups in Duluth, Rochester, and Minneapolis.  These tournaments have brought in about 30 plus people a year to the convention for a small convention like MGCON that can be a sizeable number of people.

The NorseCon council ceased to exist this year and MGCON lost the group that ran the Warhammer Tournaments.

I spoke with several groups about stepping up and running Warhammer events at MGCON; from running Tournaments to the smaller Flash Tournaments, to Demos and Mega Games and the problem with getting an outside group to run these events came down to money and who can charge what for what.

MGCON has offered to pick up the cost of the official rogue trader tournament kits (approximately $350) if there was no cost for the attendees.  On the flip side if a group wanted to charge the attendees than MGCON could only provide the space for the events.   One group wanted $1000 plus MGCON to pick up the tournament kits. With only 36 attendees (about $700) thus would be a net loss of nearly $600 plus in the best case scenario, so I declined.

Tournaments are expensive and time consuming to run so I understand the decision by the other local Warhammer Groups not to jump in feet first. But the question remains how do you get a group involved enough to run such a large event?
